If you’re new to cannabis, you probably have a lot of questions. There is, after all, a lot to understand about this plant, how it works, and the benefits it provides. We’ve got a guide that will help you better understand everything you need to know about weed before you try it out.

There Are Hundreds of Strains

You probably already know that cannabis is a plant. What you might not know if you’re a newbie is that there are hundreds of strains. In fact, there are currently more than 750 varieties out there.

Despite this large number, you’ll often find that each strain typically falls into one of three categories. These categories – Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid – generally refer to a particular plant’s physical characteristics. Indica plants are short and wide while Sativas are tall and thin. They can also refer to the types of effects you might feel. Indicas are typically sedating and relaxing, while Sativas are energizing and focusing. Hybrids, as the name suggests, offer a combination of effects.

Cannabis Has More than THC and CBD

THC and CBD are the two most well-known (and most abundant) cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. They’re far from the only ones, though. Scientists are continually discovering new cannabinoids and learning about their potential benefits. Some of the ones gaining attention include CBG, CBC, and CBN. There are currently more than 120 documented cannabinoids.

Cannabinoids Aren’t the Only Compounds In the Plant

Cannabis is a complex plant. In addition to cannabinoids, it also contains various terpenes and flavonoids. The terpenes are the compounds responsible for a strain’s particular aroma and flavor. Research is showing that they can also provide some benefits of their own. For instance, beta-caryophyllene offers pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects. Myrcene and linalool offer calming, sedative effects, while pinene and limonene boost energy.

Cannabis Can Treat a Wide Range of Symptoms

People use cannabis for a wide range of reasons. It can help to provide relief from a wide variety of symptoms, most notably pain, inflammation, and anxiety. It may also help to treat nausea and vomiting, slow the progression of Alzheimer’s, increase your appetite, and so much more.

Ways to Tell the Difference Between High and Low-Quality Buds

Being able to identify quality buds is vital if you’re looking for the best experiences possible. Fortunately, there are several indicators you can look for to ensure you’re getting the best:

  • Appearance. High-quality buds are going to be vibrant instead of dull and brown. You should also keep an eye out for signs of mold and mildew.
  • Smell. The best buds have a strong, pungent aroma. Avoid anything that smells musty. If you don’t get much of an aroma, there’s a chance the buds are old.
  • Feel. Quality buds should feel soft and spongy, but they shouldn’t be overly moist. Too much moisture can promote mold growth. It can also make the buds hard to grind and smoke. Buds that are too dry will crumble apart easily. They make for a miserable smoking experience, too.
